Operation Lifesaver is a not-for-profit national program with educational and public awareness goals to reduce the needless loss of life, injuries and damages caused by highway/railway crossing collisions and train/pedestrian incidents. The program is sponsored by the Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada and works in co-operation with provincial safety councils/leagues, unions, police, public and community groups. The Operation Lifesaver program is guided by a National Advisory Committee which provides advice to the national director regarding the development and implementation of the program. It is co-chaired by representatives of Transport Canada and the Railway Association of Canada. The committee includes representatives from GO Transit, CN, CP, VIA Rail Canada, diverse police services and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference to name a few. Since its inception in 1981, Operation Lifesaver Canada has helped reduce highway/railway crossing collisions by 75 percent and recorded a reduction of more than 45 percent in trespassing incidents.
